Two refugees arrested over murder in Kiryandongo

Police in Kiryandongo are holding two South Sudanese refugees in connection with the murder of a 26-year-old man in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement.
ASP Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, identifies the suspects as a one Gatleak, 21, and Gatkouth Anyanya Kak, 22.
These were arrested on Sunday evening following the multiple stabbing of a fellow South Sudanese refugee living in Uganda identified as Sebit Gatkek, 26, who was announced dead on arrival at Panyadoli Health Centre.
The incident happened at Kicwabugingo village.
The police officer says preliminary police investigations show that the brawl that resulted int the murder is linked to the clash of the young men over a love affair that attracted friends and relatives.
It is believed that the deceased had responded to defend his brother in the conflict.
Police investigation and the search for other suspects are ongoing.
The chairperson of the South Sudanese refugee community at the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, Mr Rek Boak, told South Sudan’s Radio Tamazuj that the man died in a fight with people he described as criminal gangs on Sunday morning, January 8, 2023.
He condemned the murder and urged the relatives of the deceased to be calm and cooperate with authorities taking appropriate legal action in response to the crime.
