Hoima court remands four over car theft

Four people were on Monday, January 16, 2023, remanded to Hoima government prison in Kiryateete on charges of car theft.

Julius Byamukama, 25, John Tindyebwa, 19, and Bernard Tumusiime were each charged with two counts of theft of a car and being in possession of car breaking equipment.

Prosecution led by Julius Ochen told the Hoima principal grade one magistrate, Elijah Iradukunda, that between December 2022 and January 2023, while in Hoima city, the defendants were found in possession of car breaking equipment including a pair of scissors, hammers, pliers and sharp metals.

Prosecution further averred that on January 3, 2023, while in Hoima city, the police intercepted the accused and found them with a suspected stolen motor vehicle registration number UBB 533X.

In their plea, the trio denied the charges.

The state prosecutor asked the court to fix a date for hearing since prosecution was yet through with investigations.

This prompted the magistrate to remand the accused to Hoima government prison until February 18, 2023, when they will reappear in court for further mention of their case.

The same court remanded Moses Tugume, 25, resident of Kinubbi cell in East Division, Hoima city on charges of aggravated robbery and theft of a vehicle.

Prosecution told court that on December 13, 2022, at Kyarushesha village in Butoole parish, Kyangwali sub-county in Kikuube district, Tugume and others still at large stole a Premio vehicle registration number UAW 760 F worth Shs20m belonging to John Tumushabe, resident of the same area.

Court further heard that on December 20, 2022, Tugume and others still on the run, while at Kitoole village in Buhimba sub-county, Kikuube district stole a Premio vehicle registration number UAT 322 G valued at Shs20m belonging to Emmanuel Busiinge.

Tugume was also remanded to Hoima government prison in Kiryateete till January 25, 2023, when he will reappear before court for further mention of his case in the first file.

His Worship Iradukunda said the second file about the Tugume’s use of a machete to steal the vehicle from Busiinge is capital in nature only triable by the High Court.
