Four people were on Tuesday arrested for encroaching on Bugoma Central Forest Reserve (CFR) at Nsozi Village in Kyangwali Sub-county, Kikuube District while more than 10 others escaped arrest, reveals the Kikuube Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr Amlan Tumusiime.
The RDC identifies the suspects as Vereriano Byamukama, Justus Agaba, Robert Muhwezi and Hillary Byarugaba, all residents of Karwensanga parish in Rubindi town council, Mbarara district.
He says on arrest, the quartet was found in possession of machetes, hoes, gumboots and fresh food and among others and having cleared a piece of land whose measurement was not taken at the time.
Mr Tumusiime adds that on being grilled, the suspects disclosed that they were hired by a man he identifies only as Kabaleega whose residence he did not mention.
The RDC says the arrest followed a tip off by one of the residents who become suspicious after sighting the 10 men enter the CFR.
The operation was mounted by the police and the army of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), according to Mr Tumusiime.
