Three vehicles crash at Karuma Bridge

Three vehicles were early this morning involved in a serious accident at Karuma Bridge along the Gulu-Kampala Highway in Nwoya District leaving two victims injured.

The accident that occurred at around 5am left Abdu Hashe, 32, the driver of the trailer registration number KBH 950S/ZD 1018 and another occupant Gifty Gido, 29, resident of Elegu in Amuru district nursing serious injuries.

The trailer crushed with another one registration number KCF 674H/ZF-211U driven by Megkal Ahmed Abddi, 32, and an Isuzu bus registration number UBF 006L belonging to YY Company driven by Christopher Okwanga, 47.

The Aswa River Police Public Relations Officer, ASP David Mudong Ongom, told our stringer that the accident occurred when the trailer registration number KCF 674H/ZF-211U that was heading towards Kampala approached Karuma Bridge and knocked the rear side of the bus that was coming from the opposite direction heading to Lira as it left the bridge.

The police officer added that another trailer that was following the first trailer also knocked it from the rear, forcing the driver to lose control before veering down the ravine near the water of Karuma River.

Both trailers were carrying logs, according to ASP Ongom.

The police mouthpiece attributed the accident to reckless driving by Megkal adding that a serious accident vide TAR: 08/2023 has been recorded at Nwoya central police station.

“There were no fatalities registered. But we continue encouraging road users to respect others to avoid a repeat of this similar incidence,” ASP Ongom said.

A 2021 police annual crime report ranked Aswa River region eighth in the country with 628 accidents registered including 173 fatalities, 330 serious cases and 125 minor ones.
